Childish Gambino @ The Creek and the Cave - 7.2.10

By: Paul Gale

Last Wednesday, Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover performed his first rap concert ever, at The Creek and The Cave, one of Derrick Comedy's old stomping grounds.  "Gambine," had fans lined up for his live debut over two hours before doors even opened, eventually reaching around the block from the Long Island City restaurant and bar. His audience was very diverse, from comedy nerds like myself to well-dressed fashionistas, along with Community co-star Gillian Jacobs and a UCB manager thrown in the mix as well.

The show took place just days before the anticipated release of Gambino's first "official," album Culdesac,  which he independently produced with Community composer Ludwig Görannson. The setlist borrowed from multiple periods of his young career, performing tracks from Poindexter, I Am Just A Rapper 1 & 2, and the Mystery Team soundtrack. The biggest surprise of the night had to be a quasi-cover of IT boy Drake's "Over," with Donald singing the hook and spitting his own rhymes in place of the former Degrassi star's.

Gambino's crowd, who, at this point, seemed to mostly be Donald Glover fans, ate up his performance, especially when a particularly biting couplet came out of his mouth, which, if you haven't listened to Culdesac yet (you should, it's free), was pretty often. Gambino is a sharp and passionate performer, and I have a feeling that it is destined to become more than a side-project this summer, a trajectory that might be stifled by his fast-approaching commitments at Community in the coming months. Until then, he has promised to perform once again in NYC, as well as in LA. It was a fun show, and I hope to see him when he stops by again in the coming weeks. Something tells me it'll be dangerously close to Derrick's DCM performance...

Childish Gambino's album can be downloaded for free here, along with a bonus video shot by yours truly!

As a fan of photography, I think this is pretty g.d. awesome. Not only because it was all shot with a Polaroid, but because it features one of our favorite comedy-renaissance men, Donald Glover (Community, Derrick, @DonGlover). Yes! It's Duncan, The Master of Disguise, rocking some fancy-ass threads with two other It-actors. Then again, Glover has always been slightly ahead of the sartorial curve. Case in point: Kanye West reblogged this. Oh, btw, let's all do The Secret and do what we can to get Community back for another season.

Donald Glover asks Kumail Nanjiani... | Photos: Liezl Estipona

Welcome to Pick Me / Pick 3, the new online game that's sweeping The Apiary. And just like every Pick 3 lottery, this game is loads of fun, easy to play and everybody gets to take home a Certificate of Participation. Here's how it works:

PICK ME: A Comedy Person is asked to pick Another Comedy Person whom they admire.
The first Comedy Person submits three random questions. Another Comedy Person answers them. Repeat steps 1 & 2 with another Another Comedy Person. Results are surveyed and verified by an independent auditor from KPMG.

For the inaugural Pick Me / Pick 3, I chose Donald Glover, longtime Apiary fave, one-fifth of Derrick, the Master of Disguise, 30 Rock scribe ("Funcooker") and one of the many, many reasons to watch NBC's Community. Without hesitation, Donald picked blerds Old Schooler and New York comedy meteor (by way of Chicago) Kumail Nanjiani (Michael and Michael Have Issues, The Colbert Report). So here's what Donald asked of Kumail and here's how Kumail answered:

1. Guilty-comedy-pleasure?
I love super terrible horror movies. There is no horror movie I cannot sit through. Vincent Price is a god. Though I wouldn't call his movies "guilty pleasures", cuz he is genuinely good.

2. What do you do If or when you feel creatively drained?
I try to experience new things, visit new places, do new things. I think so many comics I know just focus on comedy all the time. You gotta collect the ingredients to put into your comedy. Stephen King said something like "Your Life should inform your art, not the other way round." If I feel creatively drained, I'll go see a horse circus. That's a circus with horses in it.

3. I'm kinda terrified I'll die masturbating. What's YOUR most irrational fear?
I can't handle having food on my hands or clothes. I hate touching food. And I can't handle it when people who's just eaten food will shake my hand or something. Ugh!

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! Stay tuned to see Kumail's PICK ME / PICK 3.
