Stella tonight at the Anthology Film Archives

The Stella publicity blitz has been consuming all of New York as of late. Via Gothamist, The Anthology Film Archives is doing a free screening tonight at 7PM of Wet Hot American Summer. After the film, the guys from Stella will come out for a Q&A and play an episode from the TV show that premieres tomorrow on Comedy Central @ 10:30. An account from someone who saw Stella at The Baxter screening a couple weeks ago said the audience Q&A there was "the most awkward and painful thing I've endured in a while." We're hedging that the questions asked tonight will be sublimely more stupid because there is simply no better way to lure out the craziest people in NYC than by coupling a Q&A with a FREE movie and FREE Grolsch beer. See Stella's site for more info!

Michelle Collins Dominates Blogosphere

ECNY AWARD NOMINEE for best comedic website, www.youcantmakeitup.blogspot.com, won the blogging jackpot on Friday with a post about Tom Cruise's interview with Matt Lauer. You can sorta tell someone else's site is blowing up if you begin receiving multiple referral hits from them without any specific mention. After seeing such a pattern of traffic diffusion, sure enough: Image Hosted by ImageShack.us For non-blogger readers, the only people that generate these kind of hits on a weekend are TRANSGLOBAL CORPORATIONS. You can also find Michelle Collins over at TVGasm.com, the site that recently made headlines with its minute by minute liveblog and video montage of Rosie O'Donnell's stinker, Riding the Bus With My Sister.

The ECNY Nominees for Best Host of a Variety Show Speak!

The Emerging Comics of New York Awards Ceremony is TODAY. It has been talked about for weeks and enthusiasm is running high. In order to get a better look at the JEALOUS RIVALRIES and the BACKSTAGE PILLOWFIGHTING, The Apiary asked the nominees of the Best Host of a Variety Show or Comedic Event the following tough question: Are you confident you will destroy the competition and take home the ultimate prize? Jon Friedman of The Rejection Show responds: I'd like to create an ECNY mascot named "Emergy," The Emerging Emergency Ambulance Driver. He drives a small ambulance and tells jokes to the emergency patients while he's driving them to the hospital. But not full scale hilarious jokes more like decent jokes that have potential. The other nominees in the "Best Host" category are my friends. They all taught me how to "introduce" and "wrap it up." Those are hosting terms. I think we're all going to tie. James Eason of the Improv Honk Show issues a statement: Mr. Eason is proud to be included with such a talented group of Hosts/Performers. He feels that all are equally deserving of the award. He would be honored to receive the award and would place the trophy in a place of prominence in his apartment. He wishes that his computer had a 'sarcasm' button. (Dictated but not read) Justin Purnell of School Night shouts: Oh yeah, i've DEFINITELY got that locked down. There's NO WAY i'm list filler for a second year for Nick and Jessi or Jon. I just can't wait to cash in... ecny groupies ahoy! Nick Kroll of Welcome to Our Week says: I'm confident that I will take home "the ultimate prize". For me, that prize is getting fellated backstage by my fellow nominees. Whether I win the award or not is secondary to them sucking on my googly sack. Bob Powers of How to Kick People writes: If by "ultimate prize" you mean "eternal life," then no, Todd and I are not confident that we will take home the ultimate prize. If by "destroy the competition" you mean "physically beat the living shit out of the competition, either before, during, or after the awards ceremony," then yes, Todd and I are confident that we will beat down every last competing Host of a Variety Show or Comedic Event until they are bloody and weeping. Especially that little faggot Nick Kroll. Dear God how we hate that little faggot Nick Kroll. Good luck to all!

Gayest Variety Show Ever Tonight!

Hey sailor! UCB is hosting the 10 Percent Variety Hour. If you've been going to Harold Night to get your homoerotic behavior fix at the UCB, this show promises to outgay it! It's right before the ANTICIPATED ECNY Awards too. Here is a consolidated press release from UCB:

In celebration of Gay Pride Week, (and to prove that any "fag" jokes we've ever made are really ironic, not homophobic) the UCB Theater proudly presents a cornucopia of queer performers. They're all queer, they'll all be here, and before it's over, you'll be used to it.
Jackie Clarke and John Flynn host an evening of full blown comedy with a mix of UCBT regulars and top acts from all walks of entertainment.
Featuring: Gashole - (Gothamist raved about them last week.) Lady Bunny Lisa Jackson Cashetta Plus UCB peeps Jeff Hiller, Claudia Cogan, Eric Bernat, and Mark Sam Rosenthal Thursday, June 23 8:00pm $5

Metro Newspaper: Maintaining its Comedic Edge

Metro, the free daily commuter paper allegedly read by 300,000 people, recently added a featurette called Stand Up Sit Down. The column is basically a platform soliciting comedic people to tell a single joke. A mustachioed and bathrobe clad Seth Morris, made Tuesday's edition. His bit was about how New York City is like an abusive boyfriend. You can download the whole 20 meg PDF of the paper here, have a quick laugh, then immediately move it to the recycling bin--just like in real life. Send funny submissions and a photo with "Stand Up Sit Down" in the subject line to entertainment@metro.us

Upright Citizens Are Here

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us Matt Besser, founding member of the universally renowned improv group, The Upright Citizens Brigade, talked about upcoming projects over the phone with The Apiary. I read in the Hollywood Reporter that you're executive producing a new show for the Sundance Channel. What's it about? It's called The Best Documentaries. Every episode is a parody of a different genre. One might be about the spellbound genre of kids competing like in that new documentary with the dancing kids. Our show will have a lead character named Michael Gregory Best who is a Michael Moore/Nick Broomfield kind of guy--really cocky, thinks he's a hero for being a documentarian. I am not playing Michael Best. I will be one of the cast members that plays the other characters. It's just in development, but it's not for sure that it's going to be on. Hopefully it will. If it does, I hope to use a lot of UCB people from NYC and our new theater in LA. Is it scripted or improv? Kind of in between. It's going to be like how we did on Crossballs where we write out a bunch of jokes for the characters and they improvise off those jokes. You're in L.A. now, right? Been here for three years. Shout out to my hood Citywalk. How is the opening of the new L.A. Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre there coming? That will open July 2nd. I am teaching improv classes. We're all teaching classes—Ian is, Matt Walsh, Sean Conroy, Andrew Daly, Danielle Schnieder, Dannah Feinglass, Jamie Denbo. We will preview our shows in July and August. And then we'll have a grand opening on September 9th. Has there been a lot of interest in the workshops you are teaching? Yeah, they all sold out. Same with Ian and Walsh. We're going to be doing ASSSSCAT again on Sundays and Saturdays at the new theatre. Ian and Walsh and me and Secunda and Daly and Conroy, and Jerry Minor and Adam Mckay and guests. ASSSSCAT is going to be on Bravo, September 7th at 10PM. We just got that news too. We filmed that in February in New York and Bravo just programmed it to be on as a one hour special. It's got UCB plus Andy Richter, Tina Fey, and Horatio and Rachel Dratch and Kevin Dorff. We've already edited that and seen it--it's going to be cool. Are you going to be back in New York for the Del Close Marathon? Definitely. The UCB Summerstage at Central Park is the first event of the Del Close Marathon. That's July 21st and it's free. With the strong sales of Family Guy, Futurama, and Strangers With Candy on DVD, a resurgence of popularity has come to those programs and the brands. Has the same thing occurred with the Upright Citizens Brigade Season 1 DVD? We have been getting a lot of interest from our fans. It's owned by Comedy Central. We'd love for them to release more. If there was ever a petition that would help. But we just have no control over it. It's frustrating. I get email requests everyday, but there's nothing we can do about it. It did pretty well--we sold a lot off our site. One last thing--I read about a project called Wild Girls Gone on IMDB--is that a movie? That's a movie we improvised. How do I put it? We have bureaucratic issues, location releases and stuff to work out. You can't release a movie til you work out all the paper work. Since it wasn't made by a studio, we pretty much have to do that stuff ourselves and it just doesn't get done because we're doing stuff that pays the bills and is immediate and in front of us. So it's done and it's really awesome. One day...
