AV Club New York Shuts Down, What Is Going On?

Earlier this week, the NY editor of The AV Club of The Onion, Andy Battaglia, announced the closure of the New York edition, effective immediately. The avclub.com/newyork subdomain has since been scrubbed from the site and region-specific content is gone. For many Area Men, the print edition has been their weekly compass for previews, listings, and regional highlights because the trusted tone and temperament of the The Onion and The AV Club speaks directly to a young, eager, and culturally alert audience. It's a shame to see it go.

So what's in store for the rest of the local editions? Did social media ruin this for everyone? A singular print version with region-specific advertising would certainly cut down on staffing costs but it seems like a lot of eyeballs and unique advertisers will be lost too. The bigger question to be asked possibly is: How dire is The Onion's financial situation?
