Inside With the Creators of Crying While Eating
Thursday, May 11, 2006 at 6:05PM Building off of the infective and interactive style of sites like Doin' the Lynndie, Fat Chicks in Party Hats, Sidetalkin', and Sorry Everybody, comes CRYING WHILE EATING.
If you feel like a slew of quirky sites just popped out of nowhere, there's a reason. A few weeks ago we reported that Chelsea Peretti was running a workshop for the Contagious Media Showdown--a contest sponsored by media bigwigs to see whose site can get the most hits in a set amount of time. The sites entered in the Contagious Media Showdown went live on May 19th. As of today, Crying While Eating is in the lead.
The Apiary wanted details on the site, so we went right to the sources, creators of Crying While Eating, fellow New Yorkers:
Dan Engber
and Casimir Nozkowski
.
Why Crying while Eating?
We wanted to make something funny. So we knew crying was going to be involved. To produce a series of unique video images, we decided to add eating to the crying. We were on the right track when our first reactions to the images were something along the lines of uncomfortable and nervous.
How's the site going?
It started with a few friends, but has grown since the site went up last Thursday (5/19/05). Now we are posting clips sent to us from people all over the place. We just ask that your clip be less than 30 seconds, and that you also tell us "why you're crying" and "what you're eating."
CwE got a very positive response the day of the contest's launch and was picked up the next morning by some widely read blogs. We sent out emails to friends and have tried to answer everyone who's written us with questions, submissions or just some friendly encouragement.
We have yet to respond to the guy who asked if we were retarded.
Any Shout Outs?
Shout-out to our friend Greg who once cried when he ate ice-cream back when we were teen-agers. It was very funny and clearly made an impression.
