The Gag Reel

Holiday Movie Preview
This looks like it could be an ugly winter for comedy on the tube and the silver screen. The writers guild strike will have producers scrambling for alternative ways to promote their films now that the publicity train that stops at every late night talk show is broken down in the depot. As Oscar season gears up, comedy takes a backseat as studios begin summoning their most dramatic contenders to do battle in theaters. A couple of funny films are prepped for release, but what happens after that is all up in the air.

Fred Claus
From the makers of Wedding Crashers, this Friday's holiday comedy is about Santa Claus' wastrel of a brother, Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn). Sure it's easy to be a disaffected cynic scoffing at this film's alpha male pedigree and holiday cheer, but not all Christmas movies suck. A Christmas Story is a classic and even Christmas Vacation was decent.
December 7
Leatherheads
This George Clooney produced rom-com is about football in the 1920s. It's also got John Krasinski from The Office and Renee Zellweger.
December 14
Juno
Juno has received a lot of pre-release buzz for the screenplay--written by ex-stripper wunderkind Diablo Cody--and the casting, which brings Michael Cera and Jason Bateman back for the first time since Arrested Development. Will this teen pregancy comedy be this year's Little Miss Sunshine? Ju-knows?
December 21
Walk Hard
Judd Apatow does it again. Just look at this cast: John C. Reilly, Jason Schwartzman, Paul Rudd, Jenna Fischer, Jack Black, Justin Long, David Krumholtz, Kristen Wiig, Harold Ramis, Simon Helberg, David Koechner, Ed Helms, Patrick Duffy, John Michael Higgins, Jerry Minor, Angela Little, and Jack White.
