Whitest Kids the Latest Ripoff Victim in Super Bowl Commercial

While watching the Super Bowl yesterday, CollegeHumor saw this commercial that made them spit their Schlitz:

CollegeHumor says it's a total fucken ripoff of a very popular Whitest Kids U' Know sketch. They host a side-by-side to prove it. CH wasn't the only ones to smell something rancid though, the Whitest Kids noted the similarities too!

A lot of comedy people work in advertising. It's not that big of a stretch to believe that someone in tune with comedy stuff or the creative edge is scouring the net for their inspiration. Until we find out who the real weasel is, let's just assume it's Carlos Mencia, since he was in those other Bud Light ads.

No offense but I've seen sketches of people slapping each other for years and years. In fact there's a sketch group at UCB that has a sketch which is one guy repeatedly slapping another guy. People slapping each other has always been funny. Hence "slapstick humor." It's ridiculous to say this was stolen.

Yikes. I wouldn't say ridiculous by any means. That commercial is f*cking just like that Whitest Kids video; which probably has thousands and thousands of people who have seen it.

It is not ridiculous to say that the person who made that ad surfs the web, saw their video AND made that commercial.

Why the nerve! They stole my act, that's what they did!

I happen to know that budweiser approached the whitest kids 6 months ago for ideas. The kids turned them down and then this comes out. WTF?

Stealing ideas--that's the new thing!

Rejoice in the fact that, with the money you get from the lawsuit, you can buy all the Heineken you want.

I think this points to one of the problems with the internets... I imagine it was harder for ad guys to steal bits from live performances before the invention of youtube and all, but now that material is out there - unprotected - I think this kind of thing is more likely to happen. Obviously "parallel development" has always been a problem and is sometimes probably the truth, but still... this one smells like McDonald's fries in my Honest opinion. Greasy.
