Crossing Over
The Apiary went ON LOCATION this past weekend to Chicago. The mission was two-fold: to binge oneself silly on greasy beer and cheap food and to try communicating with the editors of The Bastion without the use of a keyboard. Aside from UNITED AIRLINES nearly ruining the excursion on the way back--by means of killing everyone on board the stupid plane--the mission was a rousing success! But you know, 2005 was a great time for reading about personal journeys and feelings on a blog, so to spare you another minute of this, here are a few notes about Chicagoland and comedy that might be of interest to folks here:
--We saw a performance of the live game show, Don't Spit the Water. It's a great forum to watch comics test out their character work, timing, and shock value skillz.
--Alt-room style stand up comedy in Chicago is a relatively new venture being pioneered in part by Tony Sam, co-founder of Chicago Underground Comedy. In the way that we collectively associate MySpace as a place for friends, Mr. Sam seeks to position Chicago as a place for stand up--not just improv. So, if you want to gigswap on each others' turfs, he seems to be a good guy to talk to.
--The friendly ladies behind The Bastion are really well connected and involved in the comedy community there--drop them a line if you're heading to the Midwest or you need help scouting talent.
--In hushed whispers, there was talk about a comedy journalist curse in Chicago. Is this true??
