UCB Theater in the Park @ Central Park SummerStage - 7.19.6
The Upright Citizens Brigade Theater presented an evening under the stars last night at Central Park's SummerStage.
Photo narrative below!

Hosts Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel limber up.

Rebecca Drysdale stirs the crowd's emotions with rock music.

Jon Glaser unfortunately couldn't be here tonight, he's at home getting his asshole fingered. He sends a party sub and well wishes instead.

Jackie Clarke reads some poems of longing.

Jackie feels most pretty when she's in a pantsuit.

"And now... The return of... The Titte Brothers!" Uh oh. He looks pissed.

"Aaagh!" screams Rob Huebel. The Titte Brothers convince the hosts that they should headline.

A brief intermission reminds us that if you stuck Wendy the Snapple Lady with a shiv, she'd bleed Snapple Apple.

Aziz Ansari delights with a story about partying with powermidgets in Los Angeles. Only in LA!

Kristen Schaal tells us she's preparing for a Law & Order SVU audition.

Todd Barry comes to the stage.

J.D. Salinger takes a break from writing Catcher in the Rye 2: Still Catching the Rye to bring out the next performers.

seriously, i've been waiting for njoki's take on the show as well...so?

I think this article is wrong.
JD Salinger did NOT write Catcher In The Rye.
He wrote "Clifford's Notes", which was ABOUT Catcher In The Rye.
Please correct this immediately, or I might not post on this website anymore.

Aside from the fact that I was disappointed that most of the "scheduled performers" didn't show (David Cross, Amy Poehler, Demetri Martin), I thought it was a good show, but it definitely had its ups (Huebel & Scheer, Salinger, Glaser) and downs (that opening guy whose name I forget... tough crowd, eh? and the Titte Brothers, who were only intermittently funny and who I am genetically incapable of finding truly funny because I am female). I didn't add Todd Barry and Aziz Ansari to the list of ups because I saw their act at Laughable Hype a few weeks ago. Verbatim (kudos to Aziz for shortening the R. Kelly story). So they were more like a middle.
I've never been in a crowd that large outdoors for a comedy show, and I can't imagine that it's easy to perform in that kind of venue. I liked that there was standup, but I hope that when they do it again they'll throw in a little more UCB.

Njoki=New York's sassiest comedy critic!

Who the fuck is Njoki?

I was there, and I'm simultaneously skeptical and in awe. Was that really JD Salinger? If it was, it's the first time in 40-some-odd years he's been in public, which is why I question the truth of his presence.
If it wasn't him, who was it really?
Please give me truthful answers - I am so shocked this hasn't gotten more publicity if it's true, and I'm so ashamed at my gullibility if it's not!!!

It was actually him. He was very gracious and signed a copy of "Catcher in the Rye" for me after the show (my buddy who does improv at UCB heard he was going to be there so I brought a copy). Apparently he met Matt Besser a bunch of years ago and they've been corresponding through the mail. Really nice guy and seemed a little overwhelmed by all the attention.

There's no way that was the real Salinger. Image search him. Similar looking, but this might come as a shock, the guy on stage was too young to be JD.

Thanks, Lawrence. That's incredible! I don't think he would keep the lie going so long as to even sign books, honestly, and the correspondence makes sense.
Mrs. Peterson - I just did the math and, unless I did it incorrectly, he is only 87 (he was born in 1919, so you can check that). I know 80-something year olds who look far younger than he does. I don't think that this is improbable, actually.

Sorry literature fans but Mr. Salinger was, in fact, Dick Walsh -- Matt Walsh's dad, who flew in from Chicago just to fool all you gullable people, HA! Sorry if I burst bubble, but he did sign my friends copy of Running with the Bulls: My Years with the Hemmingways, by Valerie Hemingway. I'll let you see it if you are special enough!

Recipient of the Good Sport Award clearly goes do Dick Walsh, considering my father would certainly never introduce me to yell "BOOBIES!" while wearing control-top pantyhose. I imagine my dad's response to that request would be something along the lines of "Uhh...I'll go warm up the car..."
