Inside With: Flaming Box of Stuff

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usWhen Seattle's sketch troupe, Flaming Box of Stuff, was last in New York, they blew the roof off of the UCBT. It was one of those shows where everything was perfect--the charisma of the actors was radiant, their inventive scenework hit all the right notes, and the crowd was alert and effusing with support. Flaming Box of Stuff returns to NYC this week for a very special 3 performance run. Cory Nealy--pictured left, 4th from the front--stopped by The Apiary to chat with us on behalf of the troupe.

Were you at all taken aback by the flood of high praise from peers following your brilliant performance at SketchFest NYC in June?
We were blown away. The response was amazing. We had been making the SketchFest rounds and had gotten decent responses in various cities, but New York was off the chart. It made us all instantly want to move here. I think we half expected a NYC audience to be a bit more cynical and have a "been there, done that" kind of attitude. I am man enough to admit I was wrong and New York... I apologize.

Then why don't you all move here?? Why do you live in Seattle?
Good question. Half of the group was born and raised in the Northwest and the rest just sort of found there way to Seattle. I know some of the group has talked about moving sometime down the road. But Seattle needs us right now. The place is seriously depressing.

Are you going to be doing the same show that you did at SketchFest?
Yeah, we have been tinkering a bit with the show but it is pretty much the same. It seems that was the show people wanted to see us perform... which is too bad because I was really looking forward to doing my one man show set in the French Renaissance. C'est la vie.

Which sketch groups or comedians inspire you guys?
The sketch artists we really look up to are groups like Kasper Hauser from San Francisco and Hoskins and Breen from Portland. But really, part of doing all the SketchFests is we get to see so many of our close friends in the sketch community. Just last weekend in Portland we performed along with New York's own MEAT, Elephant Larry and Fearsome, plus our friends from Portland The Third Floor and LA's Troop! All great groups that deserve to be rich and famous.

What's next for Flaming Box of Stuff? TV? International film festivals? College tours? Solo gigs?
The next big thing is writing a new show. Our process is somewhat slow and as a result we have been averaging a new show every 12 months. So really we are due to have something ready by December.

Anything else you'd like to share?
Two members of our group Dusty and Troy have a side project called Champagne and they will be performing their show while we are in NYC on Friday 26th (11pm) at The PIT. It is being produced by our good friends in MEAT and Elephant Larry who were responsible for the kick ass New York SketchFest.

Flaming Box of Stuff performs August 25th-27th at The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Reserve tickets here.
